Features: Mr. Zhi Tang often used the concepts of "poetry expresses the will" and "literature carries the way" as the thread to narrate the history of Chinese literature. Carrying the way requires no further explanation. What Mr. Zhi Tang particularly emphasized was the expression of will, advocating for the autonomy of literature, which stemmed from his admiration for Yuan Zhonglang's spirit of "writing freely with the hand and speaking spontaneously with the mouth, yet all conforming to the rules." Later scholars like myself also believe that if academic paths are standardized, no matter how grandly they are presented, it may not be the fortune of scholars. "Independent spirit, free thought" is indeed the soul of academia. Therefore, this series aims to follow the footsteps of the greats, dedicating itself to pursuing the character of freedom and independence in private law, offering a modest contribution. Since this series upholds freedom and independence as its guiding principle, its purpose is not to engage in policy debates or rigid academic exercises, but to emphasize the expression of one's own spirit and to break free from conventions. The standard for measuring the worth of an article is not external to academia but is determined by its intellectual quality. Thus, what this series concerns itself with are the problem awareness, logical argumentation, and intellectual contributions of the works. As for whether they elucidate the way or promote education, or whether they can govern the state and benefit the people, these are matters left undiscussed.
Academia is a common good of the world. Although private law is a foreign import, the Chinese need not obsessively adhere to strict distinctions between the "civilized" and the "barbarian," or between theory and application. In my opinion, the world of life may differ, but knowledge knows no boundaries. If we do not value knowledge itself and instead artificially draw lines between nations, the so-called freedom and independence of private law may ultimately become as illusory as a mirror flower and water moon. Therefore, this series has no intention of carving out a "private law of our own" for the Chinese, but rather prefers to remain empty of words, seeking the original source. Writing is not easy, and we sincerely hope that the wise in academia will not hesitate to offer their support. All works on the theoretical research of private law that align with the purpose of this series are warmly welcomed.
The publication of this series is made possible by the strong support of the China University of Political Science and Law Press. Their magnanimity and insight are deeply appreciated.
