The English title of this book is Henry Leycraft's Memoirs, and it is named Four Seasons' Sketches following the naming convention of its existing translation. This also aligns with Gissing's explanation of the book's basic structure in the preface. This book is a collection of sketches written by Gissing himself, with a strong autobiographical nature. Therefore, the descriptions of this person in the preface are purely fictional or, to say, Gissing's own interpretation of himself and the book. In this book, we first see the thoughts and feelings of a pastoral recluse deeply enchanted by lake and mountain scenery. The tranquil and serene tone in Gissing's description of this recluse life may be the most moving to readers with equally sensitive souls. As a highly talented writer, Gissing is both sensitive and delicate. He weaves the pleasure of living in the mountains into the changing seasons, naturally conveying a sense of longing to the attentive reader. The beautiful scenes of recluse life he depicts easily remind us of Tao Yuanming's imagery of "Picking chrysanthemums under the eastern fence, leisurely gazing at the southern mountain." However, this theme is also intertwined with another central theme that runs throughout the book, as pointed out by Raymond Williams—the "loneliness and solitude of the individual in the crowd." It constitutes another lingering emotion in the book—a sense of anxiety hidden deep within the author's heart. His discussion of the changes in modern British life in the book is not directly related to this.
