Features: Although the exercises in this book involve melody and rhythm, they still do not adopt the method of harmonizing the melody. Both melody and rhythm are left for the students to consider. The scope of the exercises in this book ranges from motives to the treatment and composition of ternary forms. All exercises in this book are short phrases or motives, most of which are excerpted from famous traditional music works. None of the excerpts are annotated with sources, mainly because many of the musical fragments have been modified for the needs of the exercises. The sole purpose of this book is to help students gain a preliminary understanding of traditional music and learn the writing techniques of traditional music through these exercises.
