Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish fairy tale writer, known as the "King of Fairy Tales" in the world. He was born into a poor shoemaker's family in Odense, Denmark, and had a very impoverished childhood. At the age of 14, Andersen went to live in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, alone. He worked as a servant at the Royal Theatre and occasionally played minor roles on stage. Later, with the help of friends, he entered secondary school to receive formal education and aspired to pursue literary creation. Around 1830, Andersen wrote many poems, plays, novels, and travelogues, but he was more famous for his fairy tales. In his lifetime, he wrote a total of 156 fairy tales, including famous ones such as The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Nightingale, The Little Match Girl, and The Little Mermaid.
In these fairy tales, Andersen exposed the darkness and evils of society at the time, satirized the tyranny and ignorance of the ruling class, sympathized with the suffering of the lower-class laboring people, and celebrated the noble qualities of the people's kindness, diligence, and courage.
Andersen's fairy tales have been translated into over 100 languages and are beloved by children worldwide, becoming a precious legacy of world literature.
Andersen remained unmarried throughout his life and spent his days alone, dedicating his entire existence to literary creation. To commemorate Andersen, the Danish people built the Hans Christian Andersen Museum in his hometown on the centennial of his birth.
