The novel well embodies the characteristics of classical Chinese war novels, emphasizing that the righteous side will ultimately prevail. It focuses on praising the successive heroism and fearless spirit of the protagonists, thereby inspiring people to stand up against forces with courage and determination. The romance genre is one of the common forms in classical Chinese novels. Most classical romance novels originated from storytelling scripts during the Tang and Song dynasties and evolved into their mature and peak form during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Authors often artisticized historical accounts, weaving them into narratives, thus giving them a blend of realism and fantasy. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a prime example, and so is The Romance of the Yang Family. Since the Song Dynasty, the Yang family stories have been a part of folk art. According to Luo Yei's Drunkard's Talk, during the Southern Song Dynasty, there were storytelling segments like General Yang Linggong and The Fifth Son Becomes a Monk. In the Yuan Dynasty, plays such as Xie Jinwu's Deception to Demolish Qingfeng Mansion, Yang Lianglang's Commanding the Army to Break the Heavenly Gate, Meng Liang Stealing the Bones from Wu Tian Tower, and Jiao Guangzan Capturing Xiao Tianyou had already appeared. The Romance of the Yang Family was created by synthesizing and refining these folk art works. The Yang family novels tell the story of the Northern Song general Yang Ye and his family's lifelong loyalty and resistance against the Liao Dynasty. They have been passed down through the ages since the Southern Song Dynasty. Published during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, The Romance of the Yang Family combines various widely circulated Yang family stories and legends from the Song and Yuan dynasties. The novel portrays a large number of characters, such as General Yang Linggong, Yang Lianglang, Lady Yu, Mu Guiying, Yang Xuanniang, Jiao Zan, and Meng Liang. These characters are vividly drawn and deeply loved by people. Among the Yang family series novels, The Romance of the Yang Family is considered the foundational work. Later novels and theatrical works about the Yang family were all developed, expanded, and adapted based on it. The novel boldly and passionately creates a host of female warriors who rival men in bravery. They are skilled in martial arts, bold in character, intelligent and graceful, and fearless on the battlefield. They completely break free from the shackles of feudal ethics, domesticity, and hierarchical norms, making them household names and the subject of widespread admiration. In folklore, there is even the saying, "In the Yang family, women surpass men."
