Features: This book examines the regional development policies and practices of South Korea, elaborating on their characteristics, experiences, and lessons. To some extent, regional development policies encompass all aspects of central and local government governance beyond foreign affairs, military domains, including policies related to infrastructure, science and education, socio-economics, environmental information, and other fields. In terms of development trends, regional development policies are indeed moving toward a more composite and multifaceted direction, shifting from purely hardware-based infrastructure and industrial foundation construction to incorporating software development in areas such as education, social aspects, and institutional frameworks. Based on a comprehensive review of the evolutionary characteristics of regional development policies, the features and evolution of the foundational framework of regional development policies—the National Comprehensive Plan—the book further examines the content and characteristics of South Korea's regional development policies, dividing them into five strategic categories.
In the spatial strategy for regional development, it examines specific regional development policies, cluster-based development policies, and the development of local-wide regions. In the industrial strategy for regional development, it explores industrial park development policies, technology park development policies, and tourism park development policies, as well as regional environmental protection policies. In the metropolitan area development strategy, it investigates the foundational framework of metropolitan area development policies, policies to control the expansion of metropolitan area scale, and policies to relocate administrative centers. From the perspective of local support strategies, it examines development initiatives for underdeveloped regions, small-town development policies, and regional local transfer support policies. Finally, it focuses on the new trends in regional development policies in the new century.
