From then on, the Chinese people were forced onto a long and arduous anti-Japanese journey, engaging in a fourteen-year struggle of perseverance and indomitable spirit against the Japanese invaders. In 1945, after defeating Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, in accordance with the Yalta Agreement, declared war on Japan on August 8 and deployed troops to Northeast China on August 9. With the heroic cooperation of the Chinese anti-Japanese forces, the Soviet army swiftly crushed the Japanese Kwantung Army stationed in Northeast China. On August 15, 1945, Emperor Hirohito of Japan announced an unconditional surrender. On September 2, 1945, the signing ceremony of Japan's surrender was held aboard the battleship "Missouri" moored in Tokyo Bay. World War II officially ended. The Chinese people, alongside the people of the world, jointly achieved a great victory in the anti-fascist war. The Chinese people's War of Resistance against Japan was an integral part of the global anti-fascist war. In this effort, the Chinese people paid immense sacrifices and heavy costs but also earned the support and admiration of peace-loving nations and people worldwide. The Soviet Union's intervention in Northeast China and its war against Japan represented a great battle cooperation between peace-loving nations and people in opposing the common enemy—fascism. To coincide with the exhibition "Historical Moments," jointly organized by the Northeast Martyrs Memorial Hall and the Khabarovsk Regional History Museum of Russia, a selection of historical photographs taken by Soviet war correspondents such as Nikolai Shkurlin have been compiled into this book. Most of the photographs in this collection are being presented to the public for the first time, partially filling the gaps in historical records. Dedicated to the traditional battle friendship between the Chinese and Russian peoples, and to the 60th anniversary of the victory in the anti-fascist war! The book includes a large number of documentary photographs taken by photographers like Nikolai Shkurlin who accompanied the Soviet Red Army to Northeast China to participate in the war. In a vivid, illustrated format and in both Chinese and Russian, it comprehensively records the entire process of the Soviet Red Army's intervention in Northeast China, working alongside the Chinese anti-Japanese forces to swiftly defeat the Japanese Kwantung Army. The precious historical photographs included in the book are mostly being presented to the public for the first time, partially filling the gaps in historical records.
