Publishing Date: 2005-04-01
Features: This volume is dedicated to documenting the historical facts of meteorological disasters in Gansu Province. It spans from ancient times to the present, with a focus on modern history, employing an objective and straightforward approach to accurately reflect the historical and current meteorological disasters in Gansu. The volume covers nearly 3,000 years, with meteorological disaster records increasing in quantity and complexity over time. For this reason, the historical records are divided into four periods: Ancient Times—1368 AD, 1368 AD—1911 AD, 1912 AD—1949 AD, and 1949 AD—2000 AD. Due to historical changes in the geographical scope and administrative divisions of the province, as well as significant differences in measurement units between ancient and modern times, an appendix has been compiled with relevant knowledge to facilitate readers. The appendix also includes some poems and photographs related to meteorological disasters in Gansu for reference. The style of this volume is consistently expository and descriptive. Ancient disaster records are generally entered as originally written. When quoting classical texts, simplified characters are used uniformly according to the "Total List of Simplified Characters" promulgated by the state in 1986, except for a few with specific meanings that are retained in traditional characters. The meteorological scientific terms and terminology used in this volume are based on the "Terminology of Atmospheric Sciences" promulgated in 1996. Unofficial or non-standard terms are used according to common usage; place names are based on those approved by the Chinese Geographical Names Committee, with common aliases optionally added in parentheses when necessary.
