As the saying goes, "A benevolent person delights in mountains, and a wise person delights in water," and it is also said, "Mountains and waters have their own clarity." The Chinese people's affinity for landscapes has deep roots. Peking University Press plans to present a twenty-volume illustrated series titled "Landscape of China," providing a panoramic scan of the natural scenery, historical sites, customs, and cultures of various provinces and regions. Each volume is accompanied by nearly 200 illustrations, with a rich literary style and exquisite artwork. It distinguishes itself from the current popular travel guides that focus on information and purely academic works on historical and cultural research, allowing readers to savor the essence of "traveling" while enjoying the beauty of China. The first six volumes—Beijing (volumes 1 and 2), Ningxia, Tibet, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, and Henan—were published in January 2005.
The series' editor, Duan Baolin, is a retired professor of the Department of Chinese at Peking University. He has authored or compiled over ten works, including An Overview of Chinese Folk Literature, Chinese Folk Literature Studies, The Comic Art of Jokes, The Law of Elegance and Popularity in Literature, and A Dictionary of Folk Literature. Jiang Rong graduated from the Department of Chinese at Peking University in 1970 and joined the department as a teacher. In 1980, he was transferred to Peking University Press as a humanities editor and is currently a senior editor. He has reviewed nearly a hundred academic works, including the Serious Series of Aesthetic Studies in Literature and Art (30 volumes). He has also been responsible for the national "8th Five-Year Plan" and "9th Five-Year Plan" key book projects, The Grand View of Chinese Culture.
It is precisely to help readers gain more spiritual wealth during their travels that this series blends landscape aesthetics, legends and anecdotes, landscape literature, and local customs, offering everyone a "comprehensive collection of landscape stories." The ability of this series to be published in its current form is the result of the collective efforts of many colleagues and friends.
