Preface With the further deepening of reform and opening-up, the legal system in our country is advancing by leaps and leaps. There are more and more people in China engaged in legal work, especially those involved in foreign-related legal matters. They not only need to read and translate English books and texts on legal topics but also often encounter situations where they must translate Chinese legal texts into English in their practical work. For this reason, we have compiled this English-Chinese/Chinese-English Bilingual Legal Dictionary.
This dictionary is a medium-sized legal professional reference book, primarily intended for legal professionals, business and trade personnel, foreign affairs staff, translators, and legal students at universities. Its content covers various legal disciplines, including legal theory, legal history, constitutional law, civil law, criminal law, procedural law, administrative law, labor law, contract law, commercial law, public international law, private international law, international economic law, and international trade law. The English-Chinese section of this dictionary contains approximately 36,000 entries, while the Chinese-English section contains approximately 29,000 entries. Our compilation principles are as follows: Based on the practical needs of legal work, we have selected terms that are comprehensive, drawing from various sources, while also emphasizing conciseness, practicality, and highlighting key points. The definitions are designed to be brief and accurate, striving for precision and standardization. When an entry has two or more translations, we have included them as appropriate.
In terms of layout and design, the English-Chinese dictionary follows the conventions of other specialized dictionaries, while the Chinese-English dictionary attempts a compact and eye-catching new model to enhance readability. During the compilation process, we have learned and drawn inspiration from many valuable resources in numerous professional books and dictionaries published domestically and internationally. We extend our gratitude to all of them here.
This dictionary has been revised and refined multiple times to achieve perfection, but given the compilers' limitations, it may still fall short of expectations. Omissions, errors, and inaccuracies are inevitable. A dictionary should be continuously updated and revised. We sincerely hope that will provide constructive criticism and suggestions so that this dictionary can maintain its vitality through ongoing additions and revisions.
