Features: Professor Shi Zhecun was a man of extensive interests throughout his life, describing his academic pursuits as "four windows," with the "western window"—the translation and study of foreign literature—yielding the most output. This book is a glimpse of the "western window": a collection of translations of Western classic wisdom pieces, most of which were translated in the 1940s. It can be said to represent the "heartfelt admiration" of Professor Shi for the "pearls" of foreign literature he longed to translate during the turbulent era. The upper part of the book includes short stories and novellas, while the lower part contains essays and prose poems—all of which were first compiled after 1949, offering a fresh surprise for those who love and study Shi's works.
Already, wise scholars have begun to study Shi Zhecun's literary translations, which undoubtedly greatly benefits the in-depth research of Shi Zhecun. However, the focus of these scholars has only his systematic introduction of the Austrian psychological analyst Schnitzler in the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the influence Schnitzler had on his own novel writing. Whether intentionally or not, they have overlooked the vast amount of Shi's translations from the 1940s. The purpose of compiling this 《》 is to attempt to fill this gap.
