Sociology Basics Reader

Author: (American) Karrigan et al.
Publisher:
Publication Date: 2005-04-01
Features: The selected articles in the book can be roughly divided into three main parts: an introduction to the discipline of sociology; key themes for understanding society and conducting social research; and branch sociology. Each selected article is preceded by reading tips and discussion questions. The editors' arrangement helps students understand the meaning of each article while also aiding in forming a holistic understanding of sociology. In the academically prosperous, market-oriented, and highly competitive United States, a textbook-style reader reaching its ninth edition speaks for itself in terms of quality. However, to demonstrate a non-market attitude, it is still necessary to evaluate it ourselves. First, the arrangement of the selected articles aligns well with the content structure of general sociology textbooks. Second, the editors also seek meaningful connections between the articles within each chapter, further reflecting the depth of their effort. Taking Chapter 2 as an example, its theme is socialization, with five selected articles. Finally, while ensuring the rigor of the content structure, the book also pays close attention to the rationality of the temporal structure of the selected articles. It should also be noted that the editors' writing is highly instructive. Each selected article is preceded by reading tips and discussion questions; each chapter has an introduction; and each part is preceded by a part introduction—finally, the front of the book is preceded by a "Letter to Students" and a lengthy "Preface: Why Study Sociology?" In summary, this is a very timely book for sociology education.
