Features: Zen poetry, also known as Buddhist poetry, refers to poems that propagate Buddhist principles or possess Zen themes and charm. Since Buddhism was introduced from India to China during the Han and Jin dynasties, such poems have emerged. Not only did many monks compose them, but also many Buddhist-loving literati, including renowned poets, wrote them. It is estimated that there are as many as thirty thousand such poems, making up an important part of China's ancient poetic heritage and another rare gem in the garden of ancient poetry. Many outstanding Zen poems remain timeless in their appeal to this day. To promote excellent Chinese culture, we have selected and compiled this book, featuring three hundred outstanding Zen poems from ancient monks and literati, accompanied by translation, annotations, and analyses. The aim is to gather the essence of ancient Zen poetry, providing a rich and diverse collection for Zen poetry enthusiasts and general readers. The selected Zen poems can be broadly divided into two parts. One part consists of Zen-themed poems, including general Buddhist philosophical poems, as well as unique Chinese Zen Buddhist poems such as those for instructing disciples, poems of enlightenment, and eulogies, etc. The characteristic of this part is its rich philosophical and wisdom. The other part reflects the lives of monks and literati in their practice and enlightenment, such as poems of mountain residence, poems of Buddhist temples, and poems of traveling for enlightenment, etc. The main feature of this part is the expression of an empty, clear, tranquil, sacred Zen realm and mindset. These poems often depict Buddhist temples and mountain residences, describing the profound, winding, and pure landscapes beyond worldly dust, as well as the serene and detached mindset of monks or literati, free from worldly desires and worries. The Zen poems selected in this book are mostly renowned masterpieces with exceptional artistic expression. Some Zen-themed poems are particularly good at using metaphors to convey philosophical insights. Some mountain and temple poems are deeply intertwined with scenery and emotion, subtle and profound, rich in imagery, and possess moving artistic charm and value. The format of this book is briefly described as follows:
1. The selected Zen poems are arranged in chronological order according to the birth and death dates of the authors, without distinguishing between monks or literati or their poetic styles. The book includes 188 authors and 300 poems.
2. The main body of the book is divided into four parts: author introduction, annotations, modern translation, and brief analysis. The author introductions, annotations, and brief analyses are concise yet elegant. The brief analysis focuses on explaining the Zen principles and themes, as it involves many Buddhist allusions and terms, which are appropriately explained. Since many Zen poems are profound and difficult to understand, modern translations are provided to aid in comprehension.
