Features: Last autumn, I had the pleasure of meeting you, but later I heard that your health has been poor, and I have been deeply concerned. As I grow older and sicker, I gradually understand the of illness, unlike when I was young and lacked a sense of empathy for my friends' health. I advise you to pay attention to balancing work and rest, though it may sound like empty words, my feelings are sincere. —Letter from Qian Zhongshu to the author (1978)
The term "master" is respectfully used here. In Journey to the West, the monk Konson in the Jade Flower Kingdom was bitten by a nine-headed lion. The Bodhisattva Guanyin said to Sun Wukong, "It is because you wanted to be a master that you attracted this pack of lions!" My foolish husband and wife have remembered that lesson well. A smile. —Letter from Qian Zhongshu to the author (1990)
The author of this book has been with Qian Zhongshu and Yang Jiang since the 1970s, spanning over two decades. In the book, the daily life of the great master and anecdotes of literary figures are narrated in simple yet engaging prose, accompanied by dozens of previously unpublished precious photographs, as well as handwritten letters, inscriptions, and calligraphy by Qian Zhongshu. The content is rich and profound, allowing readers to get closer to the later life of the late national scholar.
