Volume I · The Ballad of Mulan: Zhang Juzheng was a legendary figure in the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, renowned for his rigorous reforms. After ascending to the position of Grand Secretary, he governed for ten years: rectifying official conduct, revitalizing declining customs; reforming education, recruiting talented individuals for societal betterment; innovating tax systems, and managing finances. He saved the Ming Dynasty from collapse, making the Wanli period the most prosperous era in the dynasty's history. During his tenure, he was immensely powerful, highly favored by the emperor, and unparalleled in influence. However, upon his death, he faced severe criticism, leading to the confiscation of his property, the revocation of his titles, and even the punishment of his eighty-year-old mother and descendants. The stark contrast between his fame during life and disgrace after death highlights the treacherous nature of politics and the fickleness of the world, leaving later generations to sigh in regret.
