Features: In the eyes of many, Ke Ling is a versatile figure in the literary world, a polymath who has served as a primary school teacher, a journalist, an editor, founded newspapers, edited magazines, worked in film, and published essays, novels, poems, film scripts, and miscellaneous writings. He has authored numerous works, but among them, his essays stand out as the most accomplished and influential. Ke Ling was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, originally named Gao Jilin, in Guangzhou in 1909. At the age of three, his family moved to Doumen Town in Shaoxing. He lost his father at six, and his family's fortunes declined thereafter. After completing primary school, he dropped out and became a teacher, achieving success through self-study. At the age of fifteen, he published his first work, "The Weaver Woman," in the local Yueduo Daily, officially entering the literary world.
Ke Ling's life was fraught with hardship and vicissitudes. Perhaps because he came from the bottom rung of society, he deeply empathized with the suffering of ordinary people, setting him apart from writers of intellectual backgrounds. Whether consciously or unconsciously, his works were always filled with profound compassion and pity for the lives and hardships of the common folk. Melancholy and desolation formed the of his writing. The essays "Memories of My Homeland" and "Myriad Phenomena of the World" included in Chronicles of Turbulent Times are the most representative of this style. When he examined the masses through the dual lenses of an author from the grassroots and a journalist, he resembled Ai Qing, who wrote in a poem, "Why are my eyes always filled with tears? Because I love this land deeply." In "Myriad Phenomena of the World," the author captured the suffering of humanity and the wonders of the world with a camera-like, empathetic prose, leaving readers deeply moved and moved to tears of compassion.
However, Ke Ling was ultimately a writer, not a journalist. Despite his hardships, his writing remained restrained, devoid of artificial exaggeration or unbridled venting. He always adhered to the principles of art, expressing his inner frustrations, grievances, beliefs, and hopes in a way unique to a writer. The most representative examples of this are the essays included in "Memories of My Homeland," such as his famous essay series "Miscellaneous Notes on Longshan" and related pieces in the collection. Most of these works were written in the 1930s and 1940s, representing his early creative period and serving as exemplary prose. The series "Miscellaneous Notes on Longshan" and "Impressions of Qingdao" are particularly representative, filled with a rich poetic quality, elegant and concise language, and a style reminiscent of classic prose. Even the more realistic "Myriad Phenomena of the World" series was crafted with artistic precision, employing highly refined, succinct, and powerful prose. The essays in "Scholarly Complexes" and "Literati's Commentary" included in this book are closer to the author's life and personality, covering a wide range of topics with free-ranging thoughts. They reflect both flashes of personal insight and emotional expression, as well as analyses of national history and culture, such as "On the Dragon Year," "China's Tradition," "Worldly Philosophy," "God, Ghosts, and Humans," and "A Land of Scenic Spots." These works reveal a intellectual's reflections on reality and history, leaving readers to ponder and savor.
