Historic Residence of the Romantic: A Cultural Atlas of Chinese Cities

Author: Li Jie
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-01-01
Features: The book records the old residences of eight cities—Shenyang, Beijing, Kaifeng, Qingdao, Shaoxing, Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Nanjing—divided into the "Southern Chapter" and the "Northern Chapter." In reality, what constitutes modern Chinese history is not limited to these eight cities, and the cultural essence of these cities cannot be fully captured by this city guide. The author explains the selection of these cities: "Due to my limited knowledge, I can only record the former residences of the elites in these eight cities. I hope my words and illustrations can guide more people to find these old houses more efficiently." The eight cities mentioned in this book, their cultural qualities are far beyond what this simple city guide can encompass. Each great city is a remarkable book, and even every distinguished figure I have encountered is a remarkable book. The hundred years of China have become particularly vibrant due to the successive appearances of these political, military, and cultural elites. Due to my limited knowledge, I can only record the former residences of the elites in these eight cities. I hope my words and images can guide more people to find these old houses more efficiently.
