Features: The Classic Anthology of Classical Chinese Prose (Guwen Guanzhi) is a classic collection of classical Chinese prose, published during the early Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. It was selected, annotated, and commented on by Wu Chu Cai and Wu Di Hou, uncle and nephew. With over three hundred years of history since its publication, it has been beloved by a wide readership and has become a classic introductory text for learning classical Chinese. Why is this the case? There are three main reasons:
1. Its concise length makes it easy to memorize.
2. It offers a comprehensive yet focused selection of texts.
3. It features highly representative articles.
The Classic Anthology of Classical Chinese Prose has numerous editions. For this re-publication, we have carefully compiled it by summarizing the strengths of classic versions and making improvements. At the same time, considering modern reading habits, we have abandoned the traditional method of in-text annotations and instead adopted a format where the original text appears first, followed by the translation. This makes the book's layout cleaner and more readable at a glance.
To help readers better appreciate the subtleties of the works, we have added prefaces to each article, introducing the author's life, the main content, ideological themes, and artistic features of the text. This not only facilitates reading but also allows readers to gain a deeper understanding of the article's themes and ideas.
Learning classical Chinese by only reading translations cannot truly convey the original meaning, because the way of thinking and linguistic techniques reflected in classical Chinese differ greatly from those of today. Many of the subtle nuances in the original text cannot be fully translated into modern Chinese.
