Features: Ink Traces is the author's third collection of reading essays. The first two were Taste, Knowledge, and Heart (published by the China Association for Promoting Science and Technology in 1988) and Random Notes on the Margins of Books (published by Liaoning Education Press in 1995). Since the inception of Reading magazine, Gu Lin has been deeply devoted to it, meticulously reading the magazine, serving as a volunteer proofreader, editor, and reviewer, eventually progressing to writing supplementary short essays and elegant, enduring prose. The author avoids empty rhetoric, letting each sentence stand on its own, neither too much nor too little. Due to his profound love for the works of Rainy Day Studio and Shen Congwen, his writing naturally reflects their influence. The emotions expressed in his essays are pure and sincere, with refined and sharp prose. His recent essays have gained increasing favor among readers.
Gu Lin once worked as an accountant at the General Administration of Xinhua Bookstores and the State Administration of Publishing under the Ministry of Culture. In 1975, he was transferred to the Chinese History Museum to participate in the organization of historical documents. Over a decade of effort, he completed the proofreading of The Diary of Zheng Xiaoxu, a two-million-character work (published by Zhonghua Book Company in 1993). After retiring in 1989, he secluded himself in his study, dedicating himself to reading and writing with unwavering diligence. Ink Traces includes over fifty of the author's reading essays, primarily focusing on anecdotes and stories about books and authors, as well as the lives and works of figures such as Lu Xun, Zhou Zuoren, Cao Juren, Ye Zhiyao, Zhu Ziqing, Luo Ergang, Chen Guangfu, and Qian Zhongshu. Most of the essays are short, rarely exceeding three or five thousand characters, each carefully crafted and deeply engaging, leaving readers with a lingering sense of reflection.
