Features: The author is a professor at the History Department of Xiamen University. He believes that as an administrative institution for managing foreign trade, the customs has, to a significant extent, become an objective indicator of opening-up. Therefore, it serves as a new and important starting point for historical research. The author focuses on the modern history of Chinese customs. His research explores the establishment of customs and the opening-up of China, the origins, inheritance, and development of the Chinese customs, and examines the patterns of customs establishment throughout history. He summarizes the experiences and lessons of China's opening-up in history, and in the context of modern Chinese society, combines foreign trade and foreign relations to focus on the interplay between politics and economy, as well as between academia and the current situation. He pays particular attention to smuggling and customs enforcement. In this field, he has made pioneering breakthroughs and has collected and organized a substantial amount of less common customs history materials. Since the 1980s, amid the wave of reform and opening-up, our department, guided by the principle of mutual promotion between teaching and research, has inherited and developed traditional research strengths while continuously expanding into new areas of study, giving rise to a series of new disciplinary growth points. Our research publications have been widely recognized and praised by scholars and educators in academia and the education sector.
