Features: The Anthology of Chinese Prose Appreciation (Patriotism Volume) selects 147 patriotic prose pieces from 132 authors spanning from the pre-Qin period to the founding of the People's Republic of China (1949). The authors include politicians, thinkers, military leaders, poets, writers, proletarian revolutionaries, and martyrs of the revolution, as well as patriotic democratic figures. This book possesses the following key characteristics:
(1) Comprehensiveness.
First, the authors are diverse. From the pre-Qin philosophers to the Kangxi Emperor, from Sun Yat-sen to Mao Zedong, all political figures, thinkers, military leaders, poets, and writers who have contributed to the independence, unity, revitalization, and development of our multi-ethnic nation in history are included as much as possible. Second, the content is broad. Patriotism is a broad concept, encompassing governance, national security, resisting aggression, safeguarding the homeland, caring for the people, and alleviating their suffering. Actions such as "dying for righteousness" or "sacrificing oneself for a just cause" also fall under the umbrella of patriotism. Therefore, the prose selected in this book includes works found in other anthologies, but more importantly, it features pieces not commonly included—such as those by pre-Qin philosophers, Sima Qian, Wei Zheng, Bao Zheng, Zong Ze, Li Gang, Feng Shi, Hai Rui, Zhang Juzheng, and Kangxi. Additionally, there are anonymous manifestos from the modern era resisting aggression, as well as prose by patriotic figures, proletarian revolutionaries, and martyrs during the War of Resistance Against Japan, focusing on strengthening the nation, combating corruption, and resisting Japanese aggression. This broad content better showcases the historical panorama of our multi-ethnic nation's unified rule since ancient times.
(2) Excellence.
The prose selected in this book consists of both time-tested classics and newly discovered masterpieces. They are concise, elegant, easy to read, remember, and recite, directly cultivating people's noble sentiments and providing a convenient means of spreading the spirit of patriotism.
(3) Accessibility.
To assist readers (especially young people) in reading, understanding, and appreciating the prose, we have provided clear annotations and appreciations for each piece, including difficult words, sentences, allusions, idioms, writing backgrounds, content, and expressive techniques. The annotations are concise and accurate, helping readers grasp the essence and characteristics of the original works.
