Features: Regular vision testing is the most important and most effective means of early detection of children's eye diseases. This is because both ocular lesions or vision loss caused by systemic diseases are often unnoticed by children or their parents, especially when vision declines gradually or in one eye. Therefore, regular vision checks are the simplest and most convenient methods for early detection, early treatment, and prevention of the occurrence and development of children's eye diseases. Beijing Science and Technology Press recently published the Children's Graphic Vision Chart and the Foldable Children's Graphic Vision Card, developed over many years by experts including Professor Sun Baochen from the Beijing Ophthalmology Research Institute. This vision chart has been proven scientifically, practically, and engagingly through experimental research and nearly 20 years of clinical and epidemiological application. It is used to test the vision of preschool and school-aged children, aligning with China's national conditions. The back of the vision card introduces eye care knowledge, amblyopia FAQs, eye injuries, congenital eye diseases, and other concerns of parents in a question-and-answer format, making it more suitable for home use.
Professor Sun Baochen currently serves as a master's and doctoral supervisor at Beijing Tongren Eye Center and the Beijing Ophthalmology Research Institute, a national committee member of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), the head of the National and Beijing Low Vision Expert Group, an advisor to the Vision Optics Research Center of the Chinese Ministry of Health, and a senior advisor to the Golden Key Vision Education Research Center of China. He is a pioneer in the field of low vision in China. His work on "Children's Vision Chart Development" won the First Prize of the Beijing Health Bureau's Science and Technology Achievement Award, and his paper "Children's Graphic Vision Chart for Preschoolers" received the Excellent Paper Award from the Beijing Ophthalmology Society.
When using this vision chart to test vision, the examinee should stand 5 meters away from the chart, and neither eye should be directly exposed to light. The chart should be hung in a well-lit area, with the bottom row aligned with the examinee's eyes. It should not be hung too high or too low. Each eye should be tested separately. When testing one eye, the other eye must be tightly covered without applying pressure.
If the examinee (for children aged 3 and older or adults) can clearly see the 10th row of the chart from 5 meters away, their vision is considered normal, indicated by 1.0. If the examinee cannot see the first row of the chart from 5 meters away, the distance should be shortened until they can see it. If the first row of the chart can be seen from 1 meter away, it is recorded as 0.02; if it can be seen from 2 meters away, it is recorded as 0.04. This method is applied progressively.
