Introduction This book comprehensively summarizes and reflects the modern research achievements on traditional Chinese medicine formulas both domestically and internationally. It focuses on the latest advancements in the modern pharmacological experiments and clinical application research of compound formulas, striving for completeness, novelty, and accuracy in content. The book includes over 800 ancient and modern compound formulas, primarily citing research literature published before December 1995 both domestically and internationally. A few valuable internal materials are also selectively used. The cited literature is mostly personally reviewed by the authors as primary sources. The book is divided into two volumes, consisting of three parts: the Introduction, the Main Body, and the Appendices.
The Introduction provides a review, summary, and evaluation of the history and current state of the development of formulaology from a macro-disciplinary perspective, along with technical explanations for the book's compilation. The Main Body is organized according to TCM treatment methods, referencing the classification framework of current university-level Formulaology textbooks. It prioritizes textbook formulas while also selecting valuable ancient and modern formulas with clinical or academic significance, arranging them according to their functional and therapeutic characteristics in the corresponding categories. This reflects the fundamental content of modern formulaology and visually demonstrates the logical connections within the knowledge system of TCM formulaology. The content emphasizes the research progress of TCM formulaology from the aspects of compound preparation, its chemistry, pharmacological experiments, and clinical applications.
The Appendices include valuable research papers on formula theory, calculations for ancient and modern dosage conversions, a stroke-order index for formulas, pharmacological effects, and an index of TCM and Western medicine syndromes (signs).
The compilation of this book balances academic rigor with practicality. With its fresh content, extensive information, and systematic presentation of disciplinary knowledge, it serves both as a library and an information resource. It offers significant reference value for comprehensively and deeply understanding the progress of this discipline, selecting research topics in TCM and Western medicine, improving the clinical application level of TCM formulas, and developing new TCM compound drugs.
The target audience primarily includes teachers, graduate students, researchers, and clinical practitioners working in TCM, Chinese medicine, and integrated Chinese and Western medicine in universities, research institutions, and clinical settings.
