The author of the original work, Oppenheim (1858–1919), was a renowned international law scholar of modern times. The ninth edition was revised by Jennings, who was formerly the Whewell Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge and President of the International Court of Justice; and Watts, who was formerly a legal advisor to the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Since its publication in 1905–1906, the original work has established its status as a classic in international law. It has been revised eight times since then and has always been one of the most popular international law textbooks, widely circulated.
