Features: This book introduces the design and implementation of geometric algorithms that are gradually emerging in the fields of computer graphics, robotics, and industrial design. The basic techniques used in computational geometry include polygon triangulation, convex hulls, Voronoi diagrams, arrangements, geometric search, and motion planning, among others. Although autonomous processing only involves a part of the field of basic mathematics, it is closely related to the cutting-edge topics of the current research field. Therefore, professional programmers will find this book an invaluable reference. Compared to the previous edition, this version includes the following new content: randomized algorithms for polygon triangulation, planar point location, construction of 3D convex hulls, intersection algorithms for ray segments and ray triangles, and point-in-polyhedron queries. Additionally, this edition features a new chapter, "References," which provides more detailed supplementary materials on various topics. A new highlight of this book is the inclusion of runnable C language code for many algorithms, along with discussions on how to implement them in real-world scenarios. Compared to the first edition, the code in this version has been significantly improved (more efficient and stable), and four new routines have been added. Furthermore, this book also provides Java versions of all the code, which readers can download for free from the book's website: http://cs.smith.edu/~orourke/.
Author Bio: Joseph O'Rourke is the Director of the Department of Computer Science and Professor of Mathematics at Smith College in Massachusetts, USA. Since receiving his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980, he has been dedicated to teaching and research in this field. His research primarily focuses on computational geometry. In addition to this book, he has authored "Art Gallery Theorems and Algorithms" and co-edited the 1,000-page "Handbook of Discrete and Computational Geometry" with J.E. Goodman. He has also published over 70 papers on computational geometry and written more than 30 articles for the "Computational Geometry Column." For his outstanding contributions to the field, he was awarded the NSF CAREER Award in 2001 by the National Science Foundation of the United States.
