Features: This book is the research outcome of the project "Reform Plan for Teaching Content and Curriculum System in Higher Education Towards the 21st Century" organized by the Ministry of Education. It is a national-level planning textbook for general higher education under the "15th Five-Year Plan." The first edition (September 1999, Higher Education Press) was listed as a "Curriculum Textbook for the 21st Century" and a "Key Textbook for the 9th Five-Year Plan under the Ministry of Education." After two years of use, the first edition had a broad impact and played a significant role in (demonstration effect). Building on this, the authors decided to incorporate the results of teaching reform into the textbook to enrich and refine its content and system. The second edition made bold innovations in guiding principles, teaching content system, and teaching methods.
In terms of guiding principles, it no longer follows the traditional mathematical course model of "axioms, definitions, theorems." Instead, it adopts the approach of "problems, exploration and solution, induction and summary," moving from general to specific and emphasizing exploration and induction. This teaching philosophy helps students better understand the background of abstract concepts, thereby deepening their comprehension and grasp of the conclusions.
Regarding teaching content, traditional mathematics emphasizes a systematic teaching model, while the mathematics experiment focuses on classic, interesting, and thought-provoking problems as starting points, guiding students to discover phenomena, summarize patterns, and cultivate their creativity. In terms of teaching methods, this textbook primarily emphasizes students exploring problems through computers, with teachers providing background information and grading assignments as supplementary support, emphasizing student-centered hands-on design and operation.
Another feature of this textbook is that based on the authors' two years of experience in using modern multimedia teaching methods, it includes supplementary teaching materials (provided in CD form) and is currently developing a corresponding online textbook to achieve a multimedia effect with images, text, and sound.
The unique aspect of this textbook is its emphasis on student-centered hands-on learning rather than teacher-centered instruction, as well as its focus on students experiencing the process of scientific exploration and discovery. This feature has gained widespread recognition through extensive use.
