Features: The "Modern Russian-Chinese Dictionary" is a medium-sized dictionary recently published by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. It was compiled and published to meet the growing needs of cooperation and exchanges between China and the former Soviet Union, as well as the demands of learning and using Russian in China. All the compilers of the dictionary are professors and associate professors from Beijing Foreign Studies University, all of whom possess strong language proficiency. During the compilation process, they strove to include a large number of entries, keep the content up-to-date, provide accurate definitions, arrange the entries logically, choose a suitable format, and use clear and readable fonts. After years of effort, the upcoming dictionary has basically met these characteristics:
Word count: The dictionary includes more than 70,000 basic words, plus over 10,000 derived words, totaling nearly 90,000 entries. Although its number of entries is not as large as those of comprehensive dictionaries, it completely meets the practical needs of learning and using Russian by including both high-frequency and low-frequency words as well as basic vocabulary. By excluding obscure words rarely encountered in general reading and translation, it helps users grasp the fundamental vocabulary of Russian, and in this sense, it serves as a guide in terms of both vocabulary and semantics.
Up-to-date content: The dictionary is rich in practical content and closely aligned with modern life. This is first reflected in its thorough reflection of the developments and changes in Russian vocabulary over the past decade: the emergence of new words and phrases, the return and renewed use of outdated terms, the evolution of urban slang, the increase in foreign vocabulary, and changes in the usage of word meanings, among others. Second, when providing definitions and example sentences, the compilers have taken into account both the current realities of Russian society and the recent changes in Chinese society, culture, and language. Third, the appendices in the dictionary, such as country names, geographical names, and abbreviations, have accurately reflected recent changes.
Accurate definitions: Based on the comparison of Chinese and Russian, the compilers have corrected some of the less precise definitions in existing Russian-Chinese dictionaries and have strived to provide more corresponding definitions in the Chinese annotations.
Logical arrangement: The compilers have taken into account the characteristics of Russian word formation in the arrangement of the dictionary. Words with the same root are listed together in the same entry, which greatly facilitates memorization and use for learners. The dictionary has a moderate format, with a clear and innovative layout that is easy to use and carry.
The accessibility of the dictionary lies in two aspects: first, it does not prioritize academic rigor or exhaustiveness but aims to provide practical help to learners and users, and second, it is highly adaptable, suitable for all types of Russian learners, including self-study learners. It is also a highly guiding reference tool for Russian teachers, translators, and other Russian professionals. The dictionary is not only a tool for consultation when needed but also a valuable desk reference book for regular review and learning Russian effectively.
