When Mr. Fu Lei was young, he was employed by the Shanghai Art College and served as a lecturer in art history. After organizing and supplementing his lecture notes, the book was completed in 1934. It revolves around the works and lives of nearly twenty Western masters since the Renaissance, discussing everything from artistic styles to personal integrity, vividly and concisely, yet deeply and simply. The original manuscript was discovered among Mr. Fu Lei's in the spring of 1979 and published by Beijing Joint Publishing in 1985. As an important art popularization book, this work has been reprinted nine times in its color illustration edition alone, remaining a bestseller for over two decades and becoming a classic that has inspired generations of young people to love art.
The revised edition of this book, based on the original illustrated, has adjusted the illustrations, removed images not mentioned in the lecture notes, and newly added over three hundred masterpieces, closely aligning with each chapter's content. These images may show the full works, details, or comparative views, providing vivid and emotional interpretations that are easy to understand.
