Features: This is a textbook on news theory, primarily intended for undergraduate students in journalism majors. It can also serve as a reference for graduate students in journalism, communication, and related fields, as well as for researchers and practitioners in the field of news and communication. The existing content structure of this book is designed with the following considerations in mind:
A lengthy introduction aims to give readers a macro understanding and grasp of the development of theoretical journalism. Chapter 1 describes the historical development of news and communication phenomena in a broad, "impressionistic" way, providing readers with a preliminary overview of the overall process. Chapter 2 focuses on the era in which we live, analyzing the "atmosphere" of news and communication from multiple perspectives, establishing a "starting point" for discussing the specific communication process. From Chapters 3 to 8, the book offers in-depth and detailed discussions on the senders and receivers of news communication, the content of news communication, the principles and methods of communication, the media of news communication, and the reception of news.
Chapter 9 provides a high-level perspective on the entire process of news communication, offering a summary and conclusion. Chapters 10 to 14 discuss the main theoretical issues of the news communication industry. The reason for placing industry theory in this position is that, in my view, the essence of the news communication industry lies in the operation of the news communication process. Only by first grasping the logic of the news communication process can we better understand the news communication industry and its relationship with the larger social system.
Chapter 15 reminds readers that the cognitive and social understanding of news are merely one way humans perceive the world. Those who study, work in, or consume news must fully recognize that news simplifies the world. We should understand and experience the world from a broader perspective.
