Features: The A Course in English Lexicology has been officially adopted across the country according to the plan of the National Self-Study Examination Guidance Committee. To help self-study learners better grasp the textbook, focus on key points, highlight important content, and solve difficult areas, we have compiled the A Course in English Lexicology Companion (hereinafter referred to as the Companion). This book is designed to meet the needs of self-study examinees and includes the following sections:
- Summary of Key Points
- Textbook Translation
- Text Exercises
- Answers to Text Exercises
- Supplementary Exercises
- Answers to Supplementary Exercises
The Summary of Key Points provides a concise overview of the main content, guiding readers to understand the overall structure of each chapter. The Key Points section corresponds to the examination points in the Self-Study Examination Syllabus (hereinafter referred to as the Syllabus), listing these points to assist readers in their study and self-assessment.
The Textbook Translation is intended to facilitate the reading of the textbook. Since lexicology is a theoretical course involving numerous linguistic concepts and specialized terminology, it can be challenging to read. Additionally, self-study learners often have limited reference materials, and the examples provided in the textbook are numerous and difficult to look up. The Chinese translation addresses these issues, ensuring that readers can fully comprehend the content. It is worth noting that while referred to as a "translation," it is actually written in Chinese, preserving the original structure of the text and providing a faithful rendering of every example sentence and word. If certain chapters remain unclear after reading the textbook, the Companion will clarify them.
The Answers to Text Exercises offers reference answers for every exercise in the textbook, including discussion questions. The textbook only provides answers to practical exercises, leaving discussion questions unanswered. The Companion supplements this by including answers to discussion questions and listing all other answers at the end of each chapter for easy reference.
The Supplementary Exercises are additional practice materials based on the Syllabus requirements, accompanied by answers. They aim to increase the frequency of key points and reinforce learning. Furthermore, the Companion provides 2 sets of unit self-assessment tests and 1 comprehensive self-assessment test with answers. The first unit test covers Chapters 1–5, the second covers Chapters 6–10, and the comprehensive test covers the entire book. This approach serves to review and consolidate the textbook material while providing some simulation training.
The Companion is edited by Professor Zhang Weiyou, the author of A Course in English Lexicology, with contributions from Zhang Jiying and Zhao Shuli. Zhang Jiying is responsible for the translation of Chapters 4 and 7 and the answers to exercises and supplementary exercises in Chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. Zhao Shuli handles the translation of Chapters 6 and 8, the answers to exercises and some supplementary exercises in Chapters 6, 7, 9, and 10. The unit and comprehensive self-assessment tests are prepared separately by the two authors. The entire book is reviewed and finalized by Professor Zhang Weiyou.
During the compilation process, we received support and care from the Self-Study Examination Guidance Service Center of the Ministry of Education’s Self-Study Examination Committee and Comrade Chen Wei. We express our heartfelt gratitude to them.
