Features: This book concisely explores the essence of art, its various aspects, and the outline of its development, filled with profound insights, making it a commendable book worth reading and reciting. However, to say that Reed's discussion of Chinese art is entirely accurate would be excessive. Professor Zheng Chang divides the history of Chinese art into four periods: the "Growth Era" from the remote antiquity to the Three Dynasties of Tang, Yu, and the Qin and Han periods; the "Mingao Era" during the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties; the "Prosperity Era" from the Sui and Tang to the Five Dynasties and Song; and the "Stagnation Era" from the Yuan to the Qing.
Reasons to Read This Book: In 1929, Professor Zheng Chang compiled over 2,000 specialized works on Chinese art, and in addition to the revised edition of Wen Zhao Tong's "Catalog of Paintings and Calligraphy Studies Throughout History," which included 814 works from the Eastern Jin to the Qing Dynasty, it became clear that no other nation in the world could match China in terms of the depth of its aesthetic theory and the volume of its writings. "Chinese" represents a unique realm. Chinese art, through continuous yet limited interactions with foreign civilizations, has gradually ascended to the pinnacle of this realm.
Recommended Readers: Artists or art enthusiasts, experts or enthusiasts of the history of Sino-Western cultural exchange, Westerners who do not promote but at least do not completely deny Chinese culture, as well as students at all levels.
