Features: This textbook is revised based on the "Fundamentals of Music Theory" by the Music Department of Nanjing Normal University. It can serve as the basic music theory textbook for music departments in higher normal universities, music classes in secondary normal schools, as well as for professional musicians and amateur music enthusiasts to study and reference. During the writing process, the author attempted to make efforts in the following three aspects:
1. Highlighting the "textbook" feature. For the convenience of teaching, the book arranges teaching content in a progressive and step-by-step manner. The theoretical explanations are accurate and concise, focusing on clarifying some easily confused concepts and introducing some methods for solving music theory problems in an easy-to-understand way.
2. Highlighting the "normal school" feature. Music theory students in normal schools not only need to prepare for courses such as singing, playing, and composition theory but also need to lay the foundation for their future music theory textbooks.
3. Strengthening the practical component. Basic music theory, like other music theory courses, has a strong skill-based nature. Students must thoroughly understand the theoretical issues explained in the textbook and conscientiously complete the written assignments for each lesson, combining keyboard exercises and sight-singing and ear-training. The exercises in this textbook are relatively novel, diverse, and interesting. The "Selected Answers to Exercises" at the back of the book are provided for reference by self-learners. This textbook consists of eighteen lessons, with one lesson taught each week, completing the entire course in one semester. It is recommended to have three class hours per week, with two hours for teaching new content and one hour for reviewing and evaluating assignments. The content of the textbook can be adjusted appropriately based on teaching requirements and students' actual situations. The reading materials and annotations can generally be omitted or left for students to study independently. If "Harmony" is the subsequent course, then Lesson 15 "Chords" can also be omitted.
