During the Opium War period, the main literary trend was the pragmatic school led by Tao Peng, with other notable writers including Tang Peng, He Changling, Ji Xiling, Li Xingyuan, and Deng Xianhe. The thoughts and literary works of Zhi Weihe were also given special introduction and discussion. The Daoguang era was a period of rapid development for HuXiang literature. This book introduces the Xiangxiang school led by Zeng Guofan and the Xiang Army writers, with an in-depth analysis and discussion of the formation, development, and cultural characteristics of the Xiangxiang school, as well as Zeng Guofan's thoughts and literary works. The main writers involved include Wu Minshu, Sun Dingchen, Yang Jiliu, Guo Shengtao, Li Yuandu, Liu Rong, Peng Yulin, Zuo Zongtang, Luo Zennan, Jiang Zhongyuan, and Yi Peishen, among others. Additionally, there are the Song poetry school writers such as He Shaoji, as well as the locally renowned gentry poets Xiong Shaoming and the classical scholar Yang Yizhen, who are less frequently mentioned. The book also briefly discusses the theatrical creations in Qing-era Hunan, with a focus on the theatrical works and theories of modern writers Zhang Shengqi and Yang Enshou. The Guangxu and Xuantong period was the peak of the development of ancient literature in Hunan, with both traditional poetry, prose, and ci poetry reaching their full glory. In traditional literature, it mainly introduces and discusses the Han Wei and Six Dynasties poetry school led by Wang Yikun and Deng Weihua, as well as the middle and late Tang poetry school led by Yi Shundong, Zeng Guangjun, and Li Xisheng. In revolutionary literature, it introduces Tan Sitong, Tang Caichang, Chen Kaihua, Ning Diyuan, Huang Xing, Fu Xiongxiang, Yang Du, as well as the newspaper literature writers Yang Yulin and Zhang Shizhao. The book also dedicates a chapter to briefly introducing the literary creations of modern Hunan female writers.
