Features: The Shanzha Volume of China Pomology (abbreviated as Shanzha Volume) was compiled under the guidance of the General Editorial Committee of China Pomology and organized by more than 30 scientific and technological workers from the Institute of Special Crops, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The compilation of China Pomology was proposed as a scientific research plan at the National Fruit Tree Science and Technology Planning Conference in 1979. In April 1981, at the symposium on the compilation of China Pomology, hosted by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, it was decided that the Institute of Food and Products, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, would take on the task of editing the Shanzha Volume. The Shanzha Volume focuses on describing and evaluating 18 native species of Crataegus in China, with 142 varieties (accessions) resources. It briefly outlines the cultivation history, major production areas, biological characteristics, agricultural technology, biochemical components, and uses of Chinese shanzha. Additionally, it includes 40 color photographs and develops the Shanzha Germplasm Resource Description and Evaluation System. The publication of the Shanzha Volume provides a systematic and comprehensive reference for scientific research, teaching, and production, and will play a positive role in promoting the research and utilization of shanzha both domestically and internationally. The emergence of the Shanzha Volume is the result of decades of hard work by a broad group of Chinese scientific and technological workers. Since the mid-1970s, the National Federation of Supply and Marketing Cooperatives has placed great emphasis on shanzha production and scientific research. The federation has tasked Meng Kai and other colleagues with actively organizing national shanzha production and technology collaboration, national shanzha resource surveys, and processing and utilization research, achieving remarkable results and accumulating a wealth of valuable materials for the compilation of the Shanzha Volume.
