Features: Zong Qixiang was born on November 30, 1917, in Nanjing, Jiangsu. Growing up in poverty, he taught himself fine arts. In 1937, while working as an apprentice, his "Landscape" was selected for the Ministry of Education's Second National Art Exhibition. In 1939, he enrolled in the Fine Arts Department of Central University and graduated in 1944. He was later appointed as an assistant researcher at the China Academy of Fine Arts by Xu Beihong. In 1947, he followed Xu Beihong north and held successive positions as a lecturer at the National Beiping Art College, professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, head of the Watercolor Teaching and Research Office, and head of the Landscape Department in the Chinese Painting Department. He retired in 1982. A member of the China Artists Association, he excelled in figure painting and landscape painting, particularly night scenes. His notable works include "Portrait of Yi Jun," "Night over Li River," and "Small Gathering in Front of the Temple." His 1952 creation, "Immortal Hero Yang Genxi," won the first prize in the (People's Liberation Army Art Exhibition). In 1943, he held an "Chongqing Night" solo exhibition in Chongqing; in 1956, his Yangtze River sketches went on a nationwide tour. Solo exhibitions were held at the Jiangsu Art Museum in Nanjing in 1985 and the National Art Museum of China in 1987, followed by solo exhibitions in Japan. In 1958, he invented a watercolor miniature painting set and received a cultural ministry award for his creative invention. His "Zong Qixiang Painting Collection" has been published.
