Features: Organized by the Center for Teaching Chinese to Foreigners at Peking University, this series of textbooks is specifically designed for foreign learners of Chinese. The entire series is divided into three stages: Elementary Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, and Advanced Chinese. The content of the three stages is closely coordinated yet independently structured, allowing for systematic use of the entire series or selective use based on proficiency and teaching needs. The content is arranged according to the principle of progressive learning. The elementary stage focuses on basic training, the intermediate stage emphasizes consolidating and improving the ability to use Chinese, while the advanced stage aims to cultivate independent reading of original texts and written expression skills. The text content pays attention to the breadth of themes and diversity of genres, striving to be lively and reflective of China's current reality, while also providing appropriate introductions to certain aspects of traditional Chinese culture. Each lesson includes substantial exercises to reinforce the vocabulary and grammar learned in the text. This book serves as a continuation and advancement of Elementary Chinese. Each lesson consists of five parts: text, vocabulary list, word explanations, exercises, and reading materials. The two volumes together contain approximately 1,600 words (including words and closely structured phrases). The vocabulary in the second volume gradually increases to approach the reading level required for original texts in the advanced stage of this series. The part of speech noted for each word is primarily based on its usage in the text, supplemented by other common usages. Considering that students may have different learning backgrounds, some less common words and more challenging words from the elementary stage are reintroduced as vocabulary in this book. The word explanations are concise, avoiding detailed grammatical analysis or English translations. The exercises focus on repeated practice of the commonly used words in the lesson, while also integrating comprehensive practice of previously learned material, including some important linguistic phenomena from the elementary stage. The reading section can be seen as a supplement to the exercises, aiming to have the new vocabulary appear repeatedly in the text to compensate for the low frequency of word repetition in the. Simple exercises are provided after each reading material, with answer-checking methods that do not require classroom time. The reading materials and their exercises can also be used for listening or speaking practice.
