Features: The series "Pine Needle Literature Collection" includes the "scholarly essays" of eight university scholars who have achieved academic success while also possessing a poet's sensibility—Chen Mengxiong, Wang Xingqi, Gu Nong, Gu Yuanqing, Jiang Guangxue, Zhuozhai, Wu Haifa, and Wang Yingzhi. These essays, written in their leisure time, include works such as Following the Spirit of the Garden, Picking Random Flowers, Postscript from the Forest of Books, Winds from Overseas, Four Books from the Shenhui Studio, Literary Curtain and Literary Tomb, Five Records from the Xiao Xiao Pavilion, and Umbrella Boat on the River of Academia, all of which reflect their serene and elegant writing style. Some of the shorter essays in the collection are particularly delightful to me, such as the two prefaces I wrote for Zhou Yuoran's Discussions on Western Books from Yan Yan Studio and Discussions on Sexuality from Yan Yan Studio. In the 1930s, Zhou resided in Shanghai and became the sole compiler of middle school textbooks for the Commercial Press, using the profits to purchase books. He sought out rare and unique books that others overlooked or were unaware of but considered valuable. This differed from contemporary book collectors like Zheng Zhenfeng of Changle and Huang Changshi today. Zhuozhai's two prefaces are subtly chosen and highly readable for today's audience. The collection also includes longer essays, showcasing the depth of the author's accumulated knowledge. I particularly want to highlight the preface Zhuozhai wrote for the new edition of Xu Muyun's History of Chinese Drama. Having known the author for a long time, I was unaware of his profound knowledge and insights into the evolution of dramatic history. Writing a preface is not an easy task, but Zhuozhai's essay captures the essence perfectly, avoiding unnecessary citations and trivial details. Both the longer and shorter essays aim to broaden knowledge and spark interest, making them timeless. The title Picking Random Flowers perfectly encapsulates this intention.
