By the time I finished Rosa Island, it was almost a year. This is my fourth book. In that year, I lived in Beijing. The summer in Beijing is hot and dry, with everywhere being bright sunlight. Gradually, I got accustomed to this northern city. Sometimes I thought, maybe I would live here forever. Overall, I didn’t have any concept of home myself. Living far away from my hometown and parents in a strange city, home to me was just a small rented apartment. It had a kitchen, a wooden table for writing, a large clean bed with white cotton sheet, a garden full of roses where I could take walks, a dog, and a few friends. That’s all. Most of the time, my life consisted only of writing. Always living in seclusion. It was the same in Beijing. In March, I went to Vietnam. This trip was prepared for a long time. When I set off, carrying a heavy backpack, boarding a flight to Guangxi, my heart was very calm. There was a desire in my heart, and then I acted. That has always been my way. It is a magical country. Its heat, its lush green fields, its azure deep seas, its bustling streets, and the women with bright eyes and resilient smiles.
