Over the ten years from 1995 to 2004, practical writing was never tested in the postgraduate entrance examination essays, making candidates quite unfamiliar with it. The College English Test Band 4 has been tested several times with practical writing, but from the grading results, candidates' writing skills in practical writing remain poor, and the situation is not optimistic. In response to this reality, this book first analyzes the new syllabus and also examines the difficulties of practical writing and the problems candidates face, enabling them to understand themselves and the situation. The book also provides candidates with relatively detailed preparation suggestions, helping them clarify the direction, focus, and methods of their preparation.
The new syllabus for the postgraduate entrance examination sets very strict and detailed scoring criteria for practical writing. The syllabus states, "The scoring for practical writing focuses on the coverage of information points, the organization of content, the accuracy of language, and the appropriateness of format and register. The requirements for grammatical structure and lexical diversity will be adjusted based on specific questions." This indicates that the scoring focus for Part A (short essay writing) is different from that for Part B (short essay writing). The syllabus also specifies, "Keywords mentioned in the prompts may be used in the essay, but using phrases or sentences that have appeared in the prompts will result in deductions." Such strict scoring criteria are not commonly seen.
This book provides a detailed analysis of this, pointing out that candidates need to have the ability to convert synonyms and near-synonyms of words, and to use synonyms or near-synonyms to transform prompts. Vocabulary is one of the scoring requirements for practical writing, but candidates should note that this refers to communicative vocabulary. The book focuses on analyzing the question points of communicative vocabulary and classifies it. The book emphasizes that communicative vocabulary is very important for candidates preparing for practical writing, and they should focus on learning and mastering survival vocabulary, professional vocabulary, and daily vocabulary.
Through a summary and analysis of classroom teaching, tutoring class guidance, and grading, we have found that most candidates in practical writing can be categorized into three types. This book provides a detailed analysis of these three types of candidates, making their preparation more targeted.
Since the genres of postgraduate entrance examination practical writing are very broad and cannot be covered comprehensively, this book focuses on discussing various genres (nearly 30 types) that are likely to be tested in Part V, covering writing methods and techniques. All sample essays in practical writing are selected from foreign practical writing materials and teaching materials by foreign experts, allowing candidates to learn word usage and sentence construction directly from authentic English, thereby mastering more natural and accurate language expressions for practical writing and better analyzing and understanding the information points.
All the sample essays in this book have been carefully selected after targeted research, and we hope they will be of great help to the candidates. The book also selects some key communicative vocabulary from the new syllabus vocabulary list for candidates to refer to, enabling them to focus on mastering them. The book provides specific learning guidance, helping candidates achieve twice the result with half the effort when learning and using communicative vocabulary, thereby maximizing learning efficiency and preparation capabilities.
We hope that candidates can benefit from the learning in this book, and we also hope that it will provide practical help in improving their writing skills in postgraduate entrance examination practical writing. As long as candidates can use this book earnestly and engage in hard and systematic writing practice, we believe their writing skills in practical writing will definitely show significant progress.
