The Fragrance of Chrysanthemums and its concluding volume are Jin He Ren's two most familiar works among Chinese readers, and the release of the movie The Fragrance of Chrysanthemums has made his work known to even more people. In an interview, Jin He Ren once revealed that the ending of The Fragrance of Chrysanthemums had always been a source of distress for him, as he hoped to give the protagonist a happy love ending. From the recently published The Fragrance of Chrysanthemums: The Final Chapter, we see that Jin He Ren has finally arranged such an ending for the protagonist: Chengyu dies unexpectedly and meets his deceased wife in heaven. The concluding volume continues the previous plot: after Mei Shu's death, an almost perfect girl, Qing En, accidentally enters Chengyu's quiet life. Faced with Qing En's bold and sincere confession, Chengyu finally decides to accept her. However, Chengyu himself also encounters an accident, destined to be together with Mei Shu in this world and the next. Regarding this ending, Jin He Ren wrote in the preface to The Fragrance of Chrysanthemums: The Final Chapter: "I decided to write a conclusion for The Fragrance of Chrysanthemums because every time I think of Mei Shu, who stands alone in the constellation of Orion, I can't help but feel sorrowful. Could I take their love to that star? This question troubled me, often keeping me awake for days and nights."
