Sorrows of Young Werther: Chinese-English Parallel Text

Author: Goethe
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2002-10-01
Features: Growth is a process. Otherwise, it's hard to imagine that Goethe, who wrote the profound and indescribable Faust, could create such a moving character in his early creative years. Upon its publication, the book caused a sensation, sparking a Werther fever in society: the melancholic and unfortunate Werther deeply moved the hearts of young men and women. The story itself is quite ordinary—lovely young Werther falls in love with equally young and lovely Charlotte. What's a bit less ordinary is that Charlotte is already engaged to be married, and her fiancé is also a very decent young man. Faced with this situation, what should Werther do? From a rational perspective, it's clear that Werther should step back, and Werther himself understands this. But knowing and doing are two different things; Werther is particularly stubborn and loves with great sincerity, forming a particularly deep connection with Charlotte (who, in turn, is not unresponsive). As a result, there can only be an imperfect ending.
