Features: The content of this book is broadly divided into three parts. The first part, consisting of the first two chapters, provides an overview of the transformation and development of networks through the widespread application of network services, and lectures on the layered model of network protocols and the interaction between different layers. The second part takes basic networks such as the telephone network, local area network, and packet-switching network as examples to introduce the fundamental concepts of network architecture and the main technologies of low-level protocols. This part includes Chapters 3 to 7, where Chapter 3 introduces the basic knowledge of digital transmission technology, covering the digital description of different media information, digital modulation, encoding, error detection, error correction, channel characteristics, and the characteristics of various transmission media. Chapter 4 discusses several multiplexing and switching technologies in circuit-switched networks, with a focus on SONET. Chapter 5 discusses peer-to-peer protocols, primarily focusing on the ARQ error control protocol of the data link layer, sliding window mechanisms, and practical PPP and HDLC protocols. Chapter 6 first provides a detailed discussion of medium access control technologies, including random access, reservation access, and channelized access, and then briefly introduces the basic knowledge of protocols for Ethernet, token ring, FDDI, and wireless local area networks. Chapter 7 discusses packet-switching networks, introducing several commonly used routing algorithms and providing a more in-depth analysis of different types of traffic management mechanisms. The third part discusses TCP/IP and ATM as the two main network architectures and further clarifies how basic network concepts are reflected in these two main networks. Additionally, it provides necessary introductions to some current hot topics. This part consists of five chapters, where Chapter 8 discusses the structure and related protocols of TCP/IP networks, including basic introductions to IP, IPv6, TCP, UDP, internal routing protocols, and multicast routing. Chapter 9 discusses ATM networks, primarily introducing the ATM layer and ATM adaptation layer, as well as providing basic introductions to signaling and PNNI routing. Chapter 10 introduces the basic concepts and main protocols in modern network architectures, including integrated services, differentiated services, interconnection models, and protocols such as RSVP, MPLS, RTTP, and SCP. Chapter 11 introduces network security protocols and encryption algorithms. Chapter 12 discusses multimedia technologies and related standards in networks, including data compression, signal encoding, and the JPEG and MPEG standards used for image and video encoding, respectively. This book is the second edition, which, in addition to updating the content of the first edition, also widely introduces the analysis of various protocol operations using a network protocol analyzer. In summary, this book draws from a broad range of materials, presents up-to-date content, and is practical, offering both basic introductions and in-depth analyses, along with numerous exercises. It can serve as a teaching text for undergraduate and graduate students in computer science, electronic engineering, and related fields, or as a reference for network technicians and service personnel in various industries.
