Features: Without exaggeration, we are not promoting any magical "panacea" or advocating profound metaphysics here. We simply want to recommend to students a scientific, practical, simple, easy-to-implement, memory-efficient, and long-lasting vocabulary memorization method. Whether the method is scientific is obvious to the discerning; its effectiveness is known to those who try it. What is "" (liànchuán)? It refers to horizontal serialization and vertical linkage—horizontal serialization of semantic collocations, vertical linkage of synonyms and near-synonyms, supplemented by derived words, near-homophones, near-homographs, contextual interference words, and other related words. The entire group forms an organic whole: synonymic combinations reflect word relationships and interactions, achieving the goal of learning new words from familiar ones, mastering a hundred from one, and acquiring a large area of vocabulary; semantic collocations demonstrate word usage and deeper meanings, as well as the differences in usage among synonyms; derived words extend words vertically; near-homophones, near-homographs, and contextual interference words further establish horizontal connections and enable word recognition during exams. Various connections intertwine, encompass, imply, transform, and mutually stimulate and promote each other, achieving the goal of passing the CET-4 exam while deepening and consolidating understanding and memory of word meanings and usage, laying a solid foundation for English learning throughout university.
We can understand the role of the memory method through several examples. Please translate the following phrases into English:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
Your answers might be:
1) internationalsociety
2) asecretletter
3) withtwoblindeyes/botheyesareblind
4) threecattle/threeheadsofcattle (s)
5) toabandon/reject/cancelamarriage
6) toprotectaforest
However, all these answers are incorrect. The correct expressions should be:
1) internationalcommunity
2) aprivateletter
3) [to be blind in both eyes]
4) threeheadofcattle
5) todissolveamarriage
6) topreserveaforest
This reveals two common problems in students' daily vocabulary learning and memorization, which are also the reasons for errors in micro-vocabulary questions.
First, the purpose of vocabulary memorization is unclear, and students are unsure of what exactly they should memorize. If we break down the words in the above phrases, each word accurately conveys its meaning, but when combined, they no longer align. This shows that each word has its specific connotation and usage characteristics. Only by linking the meaning and usage of words can we grasp them precisely. Otherwise, in practical application, students may resort to literal interpretation or rigid application, leading to errors. In the current College English Teaching Syllabus, about half of the listed vocabulary requires candidates not only to recognize but also to master its usage and distinguish between words with similar meanings, known as "reusable vocabulary." Clearly, if students only memorize word meanings without mastering their usage, they fall far short of exam requirements.
Second, students lack a deep understanding of the principles of vocabulary memorization, making it unclear what methods are truly effective. Both teachers and students frequently discuss vocabulary memorization methods but fail to find a truly effective approach. It is truly "full of mutual sympathy but no plan to help each other." We must understand that regardless of the method, the fundamental tool is "connection." However, merely searching for spelling or phonetic connections is like scratching an itch through the boot—improving mechanical memorization efficiency but solving nothing fundamental. What matters is semantic connection, including horizontal synonymic and near-synonymic associations and vertical semantic collocation associations. Semantic collocations include fixed collocations and loose semantic collocations. The former receives more attention, while the latter is often overlooked, which is precisely the root of our low efficiency in vocabulary memorization. The translations of the above phrases are typical examples.
It is worth noting that word meaning differentiation in specific contexts and word collocation combinations are the core content of CET-4 vocabulary assessment, accounting for over 95% of test questions. The remaining small portion tests candidates' ability to distinguish between near-homophones and near-homographs. All these contents align perfectly with the core idea of the memory method and are comprehensively covered in it.
The memory method emphasizes the effectiveness of combination memorization: like picking grapes, not one by one but in bunches. The method always prioritizes word usage, practicality and real-world effectiveness in vocabulary memorization. It emphasizes learning new words from familiar ones, promoting old words through new ones, creating a cycle of old and new words to increase repetition rates and continuously reinforce and deepen understanding and memory of word meanings and usage. The memory method benefits in the long run.
This book aligns with the Syllabus and key exam points, scientifically organizing core CET-4 vocabulary into semantic relationships, highlighting usage collocations, and closely integrating vocabulary learning with practical exercises. It reflects both the connections and distinctions between words while focusing on their application and exam requirements. The synonymic, near-synonymic relationships, usage collocations, and exam content are seamlessly integrated, mutually reinforcing and promoting each other, significantly improving vocabulary memorization efficiency and effectiveness. We believe readers will find this book refreshing, insightful, and highly beneficial.
