Many galaxies have left traces of our fantasy, and we don’t know where this journey will end, but we know that humanity will move forward into the vast universe. In this book, with its short length, the thrilling and vivid plot, concise and lively language, magical and magnificent science fiction concepts, and delicate and moving psychological descriptions, not only makes it highly readable but also leaves readers with more room for reflection and imagination.
The progress of science and technology and the changes in the socio-economy are profoundly altering people’s perception of time and space. For many, the most immediate impact is on the concept of space. It is now widely recognized that the Earth is becoming smaller. Highways and convenient air networks have turned our planet into a small global village. Computers and information superhighways have entered households, fundamentally breaking down spatial barriers. Space shuttles, manned spacecraft, and space stations are turning humanity’s dreams of flight into reality, with the days of traveling to distant interstellar spaces and colonizing space not far off. Changing the concept of space helps people broaden their horizons and explore the world, which is crucial for both individuals and nations.
As the spatial boundaries of human activity expand, another subtle change is taking place in the perception of time. People no longer limit their focus solely to the present but think ahead beyond the confines of time, contemplating the future. Today is the continuation of yesterday, and the present determines the future. Thinking about and grasping the future is no longer the exclusive domain of futurologists. Mechanically and artificially separating the past, present, and future has been proven to be an outdated idea.
Interestingly, it is science fiction writers who challenge traditional perceptions of time and space, transcend them, and put their artistic practice into action. The pens of science fiction writers have long led humanity toward the future and into distant cosmic spaces, allowing them to roam freely in future worlds and engage in philosophical reflections on humanity’s future. This reflection is not based on unfounded speculation but is rooted in the realities of the present, tracing the trajectory of history, and logically imagining and reasoning about the profound changes and potential impacts that future scientific and technological advancements may bring. This kind of thinking is not a one-sided, arbitrary creation but an inevitable outcome of historical development. With the rapid advancement of science and technology, the distance between the present and the future has been significantly shortened. People living today can simply look up to see the dawn of the future world—how could they not be concerned about the future approaching them!
Science fiction writers’ reflections on future worlds offer a fresh perspective and a new view of time and space, transcending traditional aesthetic evaluation standards and guiding readers to understand the world and explore the literary and artistic possibilities of humanity’s future. With science and technology as the warp and imagination as the weft, they paint a colorful picture of the future world, offering readers aesthetic enjoyment and ample space for imagination. And we know that imagination is the driving force of creative thinking, the mother of all inventions, and the source of humanity’s continuous progress and self-challenge.
The series of books titled "Science Fiction Storm" before the readers are all written by outstanding young science fiction writers in China’s science fiction literary scene. Although their styles vary and their focal points differ, it is clear that after years of exploration, Chinese science fiction has moved from the hesitation of imitating foreign works to the maturity of creating works with Chinese characteristics. This is a gratifying achievement.
It is particularly worth mentioning that this series pioneers the genre of short science fiction stories. In their relatively short length, they feature thrilling and vivid plots, concise and lively language, magical and magnificent science fiction concepts, and delicate and moving psychological descriptions. Not only are they highly readable, but they also leave readers with more room for reflection and imagination. This is a bountiful harvest from China’s science fiction literary field in recent years, and I sincerely congratulate them on their success.
