Features: Wood Hibiscus, also known as Huamu or Jushuang, is commonly called Hibiscus Flower. It is a deciduous shrub in the Malvaceae family. The leaves are palmate with 3-5 lobes, and it blooms in autumn. The flowers grow axillary and cluster at the tips of the branches. The corolla is light pink or white. It is native to southwestern China, with Sichuan being particularly prominent. According to the Chengdu Records, Emperor Meng of the Later Shu dynasty planted Hibiscus extensively in Chengdu. Every autumn, the city appeared as if covered in brocade, earning it the name "Brocade City." Wood Hibiscus is a beloved ornamental flower, often planted in gardens and courtyards for appreciation. Due to its autumn blooming season and frost-resistant qualities, it is highly praised by scholars and literati. The Flower Mirror describes it as "possessing a clear and elegant nature, standing alone among all flowers, and being the finest of autumn hues."
In folk culture, people often paint reeds together with Hibiscus or paint Hibiscus with egrets, taking the homophone "" (all the way to prosperity) to express good wishes and hopes. They also paint Hibiscus with osmanthus, using the homophone "" (prosperity and wealth) to convey blessings.
