Features: During the editing process of this collection, I reviewed it and found that it differs from many other collections in that it includes design philosophy and conceptual sketches reflecting various stages of the design process. I believe this feature is highly beneficial and deserves attention. Unlike other forms of artistic creation, interior design sparkles with inspiration, but it cannot be achieved solely through inspiration. It encompasses the achievements of numerous disciplines in human civilization, serving as a comprehensive creation that combines art, technology, science, and sociology. It is a work with both spiritual and material elements, requiring repeated selection of materials, functional analysis, artistic conception, and overall adjustments to achieve relative perfection.
The application of computer drawing software is a significant advancement in design methodology and tools. However, some designers start directly on the computer from the conception stage, piecing together ideas haphazardly, completely abandoning the iterative process of hand-drawn sketches for brainstorming. This simplifies the conceptual process, inevitably affecting the creative essence, individuality, and overall coherence of the work. This is one reason why many interior design works in China today remain mediocre.
Now, some people provide conceptual design processes, and some design competitions only require completion at the conceptual design stage, which I believe is correct. Conceptual design is the preliminary outcome of comprehensive project analysis and iterative brainstorming, achieving directional positioning in terms of art, technology, science, and contemporary characteristics. Comparing multiple conceptual designs helps determine the relatively correct direction for the project. With a relatively correct conceptual foundation, technical issues are not difficult to resolve in capable design firms, and the success of the engineering project can be built on a reliable basis.
Currently, some project tenders demand highly specific design solutions, extending to the preliminary design stage, and in some cases, even requiring partial completion of construction drawings. This is meaningless. If not awarded, the design becomes a waste of effort, disrespecting the designer's labor value. A valuable conceptual design does not necessarily equate to a perfect project design. During the refinement process and in specific local designs, it is essential to iteratively refine and compare multiple solutions to achieve optimized integration and a high overall level.
