Features: China Regional Competitiveness Development Report (1985—2004) is one of the outcomes of the National Statistical Science Research Program Project (LX2002—77), China Regional International Competitiveness Development Research. International competitiveness research emerged in the 1980s along with the process of economic globalization. As it aims to analyze and identify the capabilities and competitive advantages of countries and regions in participating in international market competition, its research conclusions hold high theoretical policy value and market commercial analysis value, attracting significant attention from governments of various countries, multinational corporations, and international investment institutions. It has sparked a research boom in both developed and emerging countries. Organizations specializing in international competitiveness research, such as the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), have rapidly developed. Just as the year 2000 began, in January, the World Economic Forum held a major conference in Davos, Switzerland, themed "New Millennium, New Economy." Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and leaders of all major Western countries, along with globally renowned entrepreneurs like Bill Gates and heads of various multinational corporations and international organizations, gathered for the conference. Why does the World Economic Forum have such immense influence? This is inseparable from its image as an institution that has been publishing the Global Competitiveness Report annually since the 1980s. Data shows that thousands of experts from various fields around the world have participated in the international competitiveness expert evaluation work of this organization, fully demonstrating the global enthusiasm for international competitiveness research. China has paid close attention to the global rise of competitiveness research. In the mid-1980s, visionary individuals at the State Commission for Reform and Development introduced international competitiveness research to China. In 1989, the State Commission for Reform and Development collaborated with the WEF and IMD to launch China's international competitiveness research. In 1995, China officially joined the WEF and IMD's Competitiveness World Evaluation System. In 1997, a research team jointly formed by the State Commission for Reform and Development, Renmin University of China, and the Shenzhen Comprehensive Development Research Institute published China's International Competitiveness Development Report (1996) based on World Competitiveness Evaluation information and other relevant data. This report systematically described and analyzed the state of China's international competitiveness for the first time and interpreted the international competitiveness theories and evaluation methods of the WEF and IMD, greatly advancing domestic research. As China's marketization process accelerated and its entry into the WTO demanded alignment with international standards, various sectors within the country felt the pressure of economic globalization, leading to a sustained rise in competitiveness research. In 1997, Professor Zhao Yanyun of Renmin University of China traveled to Tianjin University of Finance and Economics to deliver an insightful academic lecture on "International Competitiveness," which prompted us to shift from attention to action. In 1998, we applied for funding from the Tianjin Social Science Foundation, marking the beginning of our competitiveness research focused on domestic administrative provinces and regions.
