Fengshen Yanyi is a long fantasy novel from the Ming Dynasty. It was likely written around the Longqing and Wanli eras, slightly later than Journey to the West. It is generally believed that the creation of this book was heavily influenced by Journey to the West, though the authorship is attributed to either "Xu Zhonglin" or "Lu Xixing," with no definitive conclusion. If you ask what this 100-chapter novel is about, the literary master Lu Xun described it brilliantly as "using the conflict between the Shang and Zhou dynasties to write his own fantasies." It is generally thought that the author based the story on historical events like the Shang-Zhou conflict, or even the Song-Yuan historical storytelling Wu Wang Fazu Pinghua, while incorporating many folk legends and his own fictional elements. Although most critics consider that Fengshen Yanyi falls far short of Journey to the West in terms of ideological and artistic achievement, it still contains many chapters rich in fantasy and readability. The story of Nezha (commonly known as Nezha Ruahai) can be said to be the essence of the entire book and is a must-read. Additionally, stories like Lei Zhenzi and Jiang Ziya are also highly entertaining.
