Features: College English Classification Reading (Volumes 1 and 2) is a reading textbook developed in accordance with the basic and higher requirements outlined in the New Teaching Requirements for College English Courses issued by the Ministry of Education. The difficulty level of this textbook aligns with the college English textbooks currently used by most undergraduate universities in China. It can be used as a standalone reading material for college English courses or as a supplementary text to complement the main college English curriculum. This approach broadens reading horizons, enriches English language knowledge and expression, and enhances reading skills.
The compilers of this textbook are all frontline college English instructors with extensive teaching experience and a deep understanding of teaching requirements, student foundations, needs, and adaptable teaching methods. As a result, the textbook is designed and written to meet learning demands, making it suitable for both classroom instruction and self-study.
Furthermore, to cultivate students' comprehensive English proficiency, the textbook incorporates diversified exercise methods, including appropriate writing and translation tasks. This ensures holistic development in English reading, writing, and translation skills.
All selected passages are sourced from recently published newspapers, magazines, and books in English-speaking countries, reflecting real-life and current events. To expose students to authentic English and contemporary cultural contexts, the content has been minimally edited. The goal is to provide students with exposure to original English language materials. The textbook features rich, engaging content covering topics such as college life, employment, finance, happiness, family, education, emotions, social issues, and even global challenges like population and globalization. This allows students to improve their English skills while gaining cultural and social knowledge, thereby enhancing their overall competence.
Another structural feature of the textbook is the division of reading exercises under the same topic into three sections: intensive reading, fast reading, and extensive reading. Each section has distinct requirements and varied exercises. To expose students to authentic contemporary English materials and provide them with genuine language and information, the textbook generally avoids simplifying the selected articles. Instead, it includes annotations for difficult points, background knowledge, and cultural notes to facilitate smoother comprehension. Some challenges may also be incorporated into comprehension and translation exercises to foster independent learning and critical thinking skills.
We hope this textbook serves as a bridge for English learning, enabling students to gain a better understanding and grasp of the authentic English reading world after completing it.
