Features: For those learning calligraphy, one of the most convenient methods when transitioning from copying inscriptions and stone carvings to calligraphic creation is to use the technique of collecting characters. In the original inscriptions, you can find existing characters that you need while also utilizing the radicals and stroke patterns from the original characters to combine them, creating characters that were not present in the original. In terms of content selection, it is best to start with works with relatively fewer characters. This approach not only facilitates the collection of characters but also makes it easier to arrange the layout, thereby increasing your confidence in creation.
The "Chinese Couplets Collection Series" is a practical collection of characters meticulously edited for calligraphy enthusiasts, especially beginners, based on the above two aspects. It selects over forty well-known couplets from the history of Chinese literature and arranges them in order of the number of characters and difficulty level. The collection uses classic inscriptions such as the Shichen Stele, Jiu Cheng Gong Li Quan Ming, Yan Qin Li Stele, and Xuan Mi Ta Stele as models for collecting characters. This allows learners to transition from copying to creation more quickly, achieving twice the result with half the effort.
This collection of characters has two additional features: First, it provides some basic patterns for creating couplets, which not only enriches the layout arrangements for couplets but also allows calligraphers to experience the different feelings brought by various patterns. Second, it selects eight characters from each couplet and enlarges them, placing them on the right side of each couplet. This enables learners to focus on practicing the more challenging characters before formal creation, thereby improving the success rate of their work.
Our publishing house has also edited and published two other series of collection of characters: the "Chinese Ancient Poetry Collection of Characters Series" and the "Chinese Ancient Prose Collection of Characters Series." These three series are sister collections, each with its own focus, and together they provide a step-by-step and relatively complete guide for calligraphy enthusiasts in the practice of regular script and clerical script.
This book is an attempt to compile a collection of characters using computers. There may be imperfections, and we sincerely hope that readers will kindly offer advice so that we can improve our work.
